WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
A comedy adventure set inside the world of cars. Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson), a hotshot rookie race car driven to succeed, discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line, when he finds himself unexpectedly detoured in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. On route across the country to the big Piston Cup Championship in California to compete against two seasoned pros, McQueen gets to know the town's offbeat characters – including Sally (a snazzy 2002 Porsche voiced by Bonnie Hunt), Doc Hudson (a 1951 Hudson Hornet with a mysterious past, voiced by Paul Newman), and Mater (a rusty but trusty tow truck voiced by Larry The Cable Guy) – who help him realize that there are more important things than trophies, fame and sponsorship.

Cars (2006)

sa movie and dvd magazine rating fullsa movie and dvd magazine rating full

Cars is – dare I say it? – a little on the slow side. It pains me to say this since Pixar, the studio which had made it and modern-day classics such as The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Bug's Life and Monsters Inc., has always been one step ahead of its competitors . . .

Review by : James O'Ehley

Traffic on the N1 was getting downright weird . . .

Pixar's movies were always better animated, funnier, more emotionally involving, and more original than the ones dreamt up by competitors such as DreamWorks (Shrek) and Disney itself.

But Cars the movie simply confirms what one thought watching the trailers: it just isn't that good.

Very talky with character-driven humour rather than visual slapstick, Cars is more likely to appeal to adults than their offspring. My four-year-old daughter was restless and fidgety throughout the entire movie and couldn't wait to leave the theatre when it had finished.

Not particularly funny with a thin storyline (one which we've seen countless times), the movie spends too much time simply meandering about aimlessly until the plot finally kicks in. Ultimately, Cars is a disappointment not only when measured against Pixar's own brilliant output but also when compared to other recent computer-animated movies by other studios.

Sure, it's better than The Wild, but - dare I say it? - I actually liked Over the Hedge better . . .
